15:00-16:00

After completing their education at some point in their professional career, one of the greatest aspirations of every student is to do business in his/her field of specialization. However, this requires a process during which, inter alia, the student/professional will have to take a series of decisions. The quality of decisions and consequently their outcome is mainly determined by the quality of the information and its ability to understand and analyze this information and take an important first step of a successful business. The aim of the seminar is to explain basic concepts that should be

known by those seeking to do business. More specifically and among others they will discuss the forms of entrepreneurship, ways of financing, financial planning and more in an interesting interactive discussion. known by those seeking to do business. Contribution by Professor Yvonne Galligan. This contribution will focus on discussing what taking an ‘integrating inclusion’ approach means in higher education. It will suggest that integrating inclusion requires reflection on the causes of exclusion, and that understanding inclusion requires that participants engaged in a process of self-reflection as well as critical thinking on the issue. It considers the implications for organisational policy development and implementation, including the knotty problem of data collection. It will reflect on the opportunities and challenges integrating inclusion

brings to an institution as it navigates its responsibilities to students, staff and the society. Contribution by Dr Elena Papamichael. The purpose of the presentation is to inform the participants about an extremely attractive concept from the social sciences, intersectionality. Intersectionality offers a framework for describing and understanding the interaction between various aspects of the identity of individuals and social groups (e.g., gender, ethnicity, religion, age, disability, sexual orientation) with social structures and power, creating unique experiences of discrimination and marginalization. By participating in this seminar, it is expected that participants will come to touch with new ways of understanding inequalities in society, in order to reflect on their role as individuals and professionals in promoting social justice and equality.

While science and technology move at an incredible pace, it can seem as if teaching and learning of science changes very little. Indeed, university teaching today looks – superficially at least – a lot like it did thirty or even fifty years ago. When changes are proposed, these can appear to be motivated by fads, fashions or a desire to control what teachers do rather than based on good evidence. Over the last twenty years, however, there has been a growing focus on ensuring that teaching and learning decisions are informed by an understanding of research in the field, and that research in the field

is driven by questions raised by teachers and learners. In this presentation I will explore some examples of our work to improve the quality of teaching and learning in science and engineering by working with teachers and using research evidence.

The purpose of the workshop is to present Safe Exam Browser (SEB) whose use allows more valid online exams to be conducted in a controlled and secure environment. SEB is a plug-in that can be integrated in a Moodle environment and can be applied to exams administered through a Quiz. By administering a Quiz in which SEB has been applied, the student enters a different, controlled and safe environment in which he/she can only see his / her examination. Access to any website on the internet, other applications and resources / material on the student’s personal computer is prevented. As a result, more valid online examinations are ensured in the Moodle environment, the validity of which has been challenged. Detailed instructions for use of SEB by academic staff and students will be provided, as well as useful information on Moodle parameters that also contribute to more valid examinations.
